How to prepare a garment production brief
A practical checklist for requesting embroidery, crochet, knitwear or hand-finishing work from a textile atelier.
Define the work you want to outsource
State whether you need a finished item, a garment component or one production operation. An embroidery request should explain whether the atelier receives cut panels, finished garments or fabric. For crochet and knitwear, distinguish a sample from a production order. This lets the supplier assess the actual scope before quoting.
Provide technical references
Include drawings or clear reference photographs, dimensions, placement, materials, colours and finish requirements. Number each design and identify the version of every file. If a reference is only a visual direction, say which details are essential and which can change.
List quantities by design, colour and size. A total quantity alone does not describe the production mix. State whether you supply materials or want sourcing discussed, and identify any material tests or documentation your buyer requires.
Separate sample approval from production
Specify the number and purpose of samples, who approves them and the required approval date. A sample request is not authorization to start the full order. Agree the approved specification in writing, including the treatment of changes after approval.
Describe delivery and packaging
Provide the delivery destination and target date, plus labelling, packing and carton requirements. Ask for shipping costs, responsibilities and required documentation to be confirmed separately. Avoid assuming that a production quotation includes freight or destination charges.
